 Four US States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) intersect at the point they call Four Corners. A marker was placed here in 1912 and later upgraded to a brass disk embedded in the granite in 1992 and monument, Uniquely this is the only place in the entire United States where four states touch. Navajo and Ute Mountain Reservations occupy the Four Corners region comprising of approximately 25,000 square-miles. The site, established in 1868 by the US Government Surveyors and Astronomers, was originally surveyed as part of a study of Colorado's southern boundary. Four Corners Monument is found west of US Highway 160, 40 miles southwest of Cortez, Colorado. The monument represents Native American artists and craftspeople from the Navajo, or Dine, and Ute nations. Throughout the Four Corners area, archeologists have recovered ancient puebloan ruins dating as far back as prior to 1300 AD.
